It serves as the capital of the Tigray Region. The city sits at a high elevation above sea level. It is the second-largest city in all of Ethiopia. Only the capital city, Addis Ababa, is larger than Mekelle. The city is much bigger than Adigrat, which is the next largest regional center. Mekelle is a busy hub for politics, culture, and business.

Many different things happen in the city to keep it running. Most people there work for the government or in trade. Some people run small businesses or work in large factories. In 2007, new factories began making cement and textiles. These items are sold to people nearby and even to other countries. Mekelle is also a place for learning and study. Mekelle University grew from an old college that focused on farming. About a dozen other colleges also exist in the city now.

The history of Mekelle goes back hundreds of years. It likely began as a small place called Enda Meseqel in the 13th century. By the early 1800s, it had become a real town. A leader named Yohannes IV helped it become a regional capital. He chose the location because it was near rich farmland and salt lands.

He also built a grand palace between 1882 and 1884. This palace was designed by an Italian architect named Giacomo Naretti. Yohannes IV also started the large Monday market and a church.

Mekelle has changed a lot through the 20th century. During the Italian occupation from 1935 to 1941, the city was modernized. The Italians built a military airport and new roads. They also added telephone lines, electricity, and water pipelines.

They even built a cinema hall and sports centers. This helped the city grow to twice its former size. In the years after that, the city built more schools and banks. A master plan was even made for the city in 1962.

The city has also faced very difficult and sad times. There were many wars that brought damage to the people. During a famine in the 1980s, many hungry people stayed in camps near the city.

More recently, the Tigray War brought fighting and shelling to the city. These hard events caused many people to lose their homes or lives. Because of this, the city has monuments to remember those who were lost.
