Axum is a historic town in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia.

It sits in the Central Zone near the base of the Adwa mountains. The town is surrounded by a place called La'ilay Maychew. Axum was once the capital of the powerful Aksumite Empire. Today, it is a place where many people live. In 2015, the population was about 66,900 residents. Because it is so important, UNESCO named its sites as World Heritage Sites.

Long ago, the people of Axum were great builders and makers. They used large blocks of granite to build strong walls. They also used mud mortar and bricks for arches. Some of their buildings even had wooden frames that looked like "monkey-heads."

They made many useful things like glassware and pottery. They were also skilled at working with metal, ivory, and leather. The city likely had a good water supply from a reservoir called May Sum. They also had many farms that grew wheat for food.

Archaeologists have found that people lived in this area for a very long time. Some stone Age remains were found at sites like Gobadra. By the 1st century AD, the city was already a busy metropolis.

One of the most famous things they made were stelae. These are tall stone towers called obelisks used as grave markers. At first, these granite towers were plain and rough. Later, they were carved to look like tall, multi-storey towers.

Axum has a very long and changing history. In the 6th century, a visitor saw a king's palace with bronze unicorns.

Later, the city grew poorer and became more isolated. By the end of the 9th century, much of Axum lay in ruins. However, the city rose to prominence again later on. It became the spiritual capital of the Ethiopian Empire. Many kings chose Axum as the place for their coronation ceremonies. One famous church there is the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion.
