Megapodes are medium to large birds. Their name means "large foot." This is because they have heavy legs and big feet.

Most of these birds live in woods. They are often brown or black.

These birds do not sit on their eggs. They use other ways to keep them warm. Many species build big mounds of dead leaves. As the leaves rot, they make heat. The male bird adds or removes leaves to control the heat.

Other birds bury eggs in warm sand or near volcanoes.

Megapode eggs are very special. They have a very large yolk. The yolk is 50 to 70 percent of the egg weight. This helps the babies grow strong. When they hatch, they are superprecocial. This means they are very mature.

They have feathers and open eyes. They can run and even fly on their first day! They use strong claws to break out of the shell. They do not have an egg tooth like other birds. They must scratch their way to the surface.
