Megapodes are found throughout the broader Australasian region. This includes Australia, New Guinea, and islands in the western Pacific. They also live in Indonesia east of the Wallace Line and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The distribution of these birds has contracted since the arrival of humans. Many island groups, such as Fiji, Tonga, and New Caledonia, have lost many or all of their species. Currently, nine megapode species are considered at risk of extinction. The loss of habitat has been a significant factor in their declining numbers.

Humans have a deep connection to these birds, especially in Oceania. Megapode eggs are considered a delicacy and are often gifted to show loyalty, friendship, or respect. These eggs are much larger than chicken eggs. They are about twice the size of a chicken egg, and the yolks are roughly four times as massive. In the 1970s, egg harvesting reached a massive peak. It was estimated that between 4 million and 8.9 million Melanesian megapode eggs were harvested annually in Pokili alone. This high level of harvesting has put great pressure on the species.

The impact of human activity on nesting sites is a major concern for scientists. In the year 2000, researchers looked at 131 original nesting sites. They found that 42 sites had been abandoned. Another 38 sites were severely threatened, and 34 were threatened. Only 5 of the original nesting sites were considered viable at that time. Because some species rely on specific geothermal areas, they are especially vulnerable to changes in their environment. Protecting these specific nesting areas is vital for the survival of the family Megapodiidae.
