It was made by the company Sega to bring the arcade experience into people's homes. People loved it because it had very strong hardware for its time. It was built to play games with much better graphics than older systems. This machine helped Sega compete in a big era of video games. It played a huge role in preparing Sega for its next big console, the Genesis.

Playing the system involved using different types of media to load games.

Most games came in plastic cartridges that you plugged into the machine. You could also use small, credit card-sized Sega Cards to play. Some special games even worked with 3D glasses to make the screen look deep. You could also use a light gun to play shooting games.

Later, Sega released a cheaper model called the Master System II. This newer version only used cartridges and did not work with the 3D glasses.

Sega first started making consoles with the SG-1000 in Japan in 1983.

The Master System was actually a redesigned version of the Mark III. Engineers like Hideki Sato and Masami Ishikawa worked hard to improve it. They wanted a stronger graphics chip than the one used in the older SG-1000. This new chip was based on technology from Sega's arcade machines. The Mark III launched in Japan on October 20, 1985, for 15,000 yen. This helped Sega try to compete with Nintendo's popular consoles.

Sega brought the Master System to North America in September 1986.

They gave it a white design with a grid pattern inspired by Apple products. The name "Master System" was chosen by employees throwing darts at a board. They wanted a name that sounded strong, like a martial arts master. In North America, the console cost $200 at its launch. It was sold with a light gun and two controllers. While it struggled against Nintendo in the US, it sold many units worldwide.

Even though it was hard to compete in Japan and America, it was a giant success elsewhere.

In the United Kingdom, it became the best-selling console by the year 1990. In Brazil, a company called Tectoy helped it become very popular. Tectoy even started a special club and a telephone service for game tips. The Master System is estimated to have sold between 10 and 13 million units globally. It showed that different parts of the world have different tastes in games. This success helped Sega grow into a major name in gaming history.
