In North America, Sega chose the name Genesis to mean a new beginning. This console was part of the fourth generation of gaming systems. It helped change how people thought about video games. Many people remember it for its fast games and cool style.

To make the console work, engineers used parts from arcade machines.

They used a Motorola 68000 as the central processing unit, or CPU. This acted as the main brain of the system. They also added a Zilog Z80 to act as a sound controller. This helped because the main brain could focus on the pictures. The system uses hardware sprites and tiles to show movement on the screen.

Games are played using small plastic cartridges called ROM-based cartridges. This system can play a library of more than 800 different games.

Sega has a long history of making games for arcades.

In the early 1980s, Sega was one of the top five arcade makers in the United States. After a downturn in the arcade business, the company decided to move into home consoles. They first released the SG-1000 in Japan in 1983. Later, they made the Master System, which was successful in Europe and Brazil. The Genesis was designed by a team led by Hideki Sato and Masami Ishikawa. They wanted a machine that could compete with companies like Nintendo.

Different parts of the world received the console at different times.

In Brazil, a company named Tectoy sold about 3 million licensed versions. Samsung sold the system in South Korea under different names. Worldwide, Sega sold 30.75 million of its own Genesis units. These numbers show how much the console helped Sega grow.

Sega also made extra tools called add-ons to expand what the console could do.

One add-on was the Sega CD, which plays games on compact discs. This allowed the system to show full-motion video. Another tool was the 32X, which added 32-bit processing power for 3D gaming.

There was even a LaserActive that ran games on LaserDiscs. While these add-ons were interesting, they often caused confusion for buyers. Even so, the Genesis remains a huge part of gaming history. Many of its classic games are still played today on modern computers and consoles.
