These stories are based on characters from Marvel comic books. The franchise includes many different types of media. You can watch superhero films in theaters. You can also watch television series and short films. Some stories are even found in digital series and books. This shared universe allows characters to meet in the same settings. This makes the world feel very big and connected.

Marvel releases its stories in organized groups called "Phases." The first three phases are known as The Infinity Saga. The next three phases are called The Multiverse Saga. Phase One started with the film Iron Man in 2008. That phase ended with the crossover film The Avengers in 2012. Phase Two began with Iron Man 3 in 2013. It finished with the movie Ant-Man in 2015. Phase Three started with Captain America: Civil War in 2016. It concluded with Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019.

Building this world was a big job for Marvel Studios. Before 2005, Marvel worked with other studios to make films. They wanted more control over their own creative projects. Avi Arad helped start Marvel Studios to do this. Kevin Feige joined the team as a second-in-command. He wanted to combine characters like they did in comics. He envisioned a shared universe for all the heroes. To pay for this, they got $525 million in funding. A creative committee helped keep the stories true to the books.

In 2009, the Walt Disney Company bought Marvel for $4 billion. This changed how the movies were shared with the world. Marvel Studios later joined Walt Disney Studios in 2015. They also began making shows for the Disney+ streaming service. WandaVision was the first Marvel Studios series for Disney+ in 2021. This show marked the start of Phase Four. The studio even created a special branch for animation. They made a show called What If...? for this purpose. They also make Marvel Studios Special Presentations like Werewolf by Night.

The MCU has become one of the most successful franchises ever. It has made a huge amount of money at the box office. Many people and critics give the films positive reviews. This success has inspired other studios to try making shared universes. You can even see Marvel stories in theme park attractions. They have inspired video games and art exhibits too. Some projects in the Multiverse Saga did not do as well. The studio said this happened because they made so much content. Because of this, they began to make less content in 2024.
