He was born in a place called Hispania. This land is part of Spain today. As a boy, he loved the quiet country life. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends.

When he grew up, he moved to Rome. He lived in a small room high up in a building. The city was very busy and loud. Martial wrote many short poems called epigrams. He wrote 1,561 of these poems. Most of them are still with us today.

His poems show us what life was like in Rome. He wrote about the streets, the markets, and the baths. Some poems were funny. Other poems were sharp and poked fun at people. He wrote about his many friends and his wealthy patrons. Patrons were rich people who helped him with money and food.

Martial also wrote about his old home. He missed the simple joys of the country. His poems help us see the colorful world of ancient Rome. He used his skill with words to make the past feel real.
