Caecilius Statius was a famous comic poet in Rome. He lived a long time ago. Some say he was born to a Celtic family. He may have come to Rome as a prisoner.

Caecilius was very good at writing funny plays. He took old stories from Greece. He made them fit Roman life. This style of play is called Comoedia Palliata. His stories often focused on families. They looked at how people act in society.

Many people in Rome loved his work. His plays were so popular that people knew them just by their titles. A critic named Volcatius Sedigitus called him the best comic poet. Other writers said he was very skilled at building a plot.

We do not have all his plays today. We only have small pieces called fragments. One play was called Plocium, which means The Necklace. We also found a large piece of a play called Obolostates. This piece was found in a place called Herculaneum. It may have many lines of text.
