He was born in a small town called Rudiae. He could speak three different languages. These were Greek, Latin, and Oscan. He said these languages gave him "three hearts."

Ennius is often called the father of Roman poetry. His most famous work was an epic poem called the Annales. An epic poem is a long story about heroes. The Annales told the history of Rome. It used a special rhythm called dactylic hexameter. This rhythm became the standard for Latin poets. Roman children even used his poems in school.

He also wrote many other things. He wrote plays and even poems about food. One poem, the Hedyphagetica, talked about the best fish to eat. He wrote a collection of poems called the Saturae. These were the first Roman satires. Satire is a way of writing to show wit or lessons. Ennius lived a simple life in Rome. He died at about age 70. He was proud of his work. He said his words would live on through people.
