She was the wife of George Washington, the first president. People often call her the first lady of the United States. Even though that name was not used yet, she set the rules for the role. She showed how a president's wife should act in public. Historians often rank her as one of the best first ladies. She helped define what this job looks like for everyone who follows.

Martha grew up in the colony of Virginia.

She was born on June 2, 1731, at Chestnut Grove Plantation. Her father, John Dandridge, was a planter and a clerk. Martha was the oldest of eight children in her family. Because she was the oldest, she helped take care of her siblings. She learned how to behave like a lady of high status. She was also a very skilled horse rider.

Her life changed many times through marriage and loss.

When the war began, George became the leader of the army. Martha visited the soldiers in their camps during the cold winters. She helped by sewing clothes for the men in need. She even started a sewing circle to help the war effort. Sadly, her son John died from a camp illness during the war. Martha and George then took in his two youngest children.

After the war, Martha entered a new kind of public life.

George became the president in 1789. Martha had to host many social events every week. She felt some pressure from this new, famous life. She worked hard to be both dignified and humble. This helped the new nation look good to the world. The Washingtons finally retired to Mount Vernon in 1797. Martha died in 1802, leaving a great legacy behind.
