Davis was born on June 3, 1808, in Fairview, Kentucky. He was the youngest of ten children born to Jane and Samuel Emory Davis. His father had served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The family moved to Mississippi when Jefferson was a young child. His older brother, Joseph Emory Davis, played a major role in his life. Joseph helped secure Jefferson's appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

During his military career, Davis experienced many challenges. He often suffered from poor health, including pneumonia and bronchitis. In 1833, he became romantically involved with Sarah Knox Taylor. She was the daughter of Zachary Taylor, a future U.S. president. Davis and Sarah married on June 17, 1835.
Sadly, Sarah died from malaria only three months after their wedding. Following his military resignation in 1835, Davis turned to agriculture. He became a cotton planter at Brierfield Plantation in Mississippi. He built this estate on land owned by his brother.
Davis's life as a planter was closely tied to the system of slavery. He used enslaved African Americans to work his fields and manage his estate. In 1836, he possessed 23 enslaved people. This number grew steadily over the following decades. By 1840, he possessed 40 enslaved people. By 1860, he owned 113 enslaved people.
One man, James Pemberton, served as his effective overseer. This economic system was a central part of the Southern social structure.
Political life became a primary focus for Davis in the 1840s. He joined the Democratic Party and became active in Mississippi politics. In 1845, he married Varina Howell, and they had six children.
During this time, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He also served as a colonel in the Mexican–American War. Later, President Franklin Pierce appointed him as the 23rd United States secretary of war. From 1857 to 1861, Davis served in the United States Senate.
When Mississippi seceded from the Union in 1861, Davis resigned from the Senate.
He then assumed the presidency of the newly formed Confederate States. He led the South through the entirety of the Civil War. The war ended in 1865 when the Confederacy was defeated. Davis was captured shortly after the conflict concluded. He was imprisoned at Fort Monroe for two years. He faced accusations of treason and was linked to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. However, he was eventually released without a trial.
Today, historians view Davis's legacy through different lenses.
In the late 19th century, the "Lost Cause" movement viewed him as a hero. This movement sought to celebrate Confederate leaders. However, in the 21st century, views have shifted significantly. Many people now criticize his leadership and his support for slavery and racism. His actions are often described as constituting treason against the United States. Because of these changing perspectives, many memorials dedicated to him have been removed across the country.
