Cass was born in New Hampshire on October 9, 1782. His father was a veteran of the American Revolution. After studying law, Cass moved to Ohio to start his career. He even helped start a group called the Grand Lodge of Michigan.

In 1813, President James Madison made him the Governor of Michigan Territory. He stayed in this role until 1831. While he was governor, he helped make treaties with Native American tribes. These treaties gave much of the land to the United States. He also led an expedition to find the start of the Mississippi River.

His work with the government continued in even bigger ways. In 1831, he became the Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson. During this time, he helped carry out the Indian removal policy. This policy moved many Native American tribes to new lands.

Cass had big dreams of becoming the President of the United States. He ran for the job in 1848 as a Democrat. He spoke a lot about an idea called popular sovereignty. This idea said that people in each state should vote on slavery.

This idea was very controversial at the time. It caused his political party to split into different groups. Because of this split, he lost the election to Zachary Taylor. He later served in the U.S. Senate for many years.

In his later years, Cass held one more major job. In 1857, President James Buchanan made him the Secretary of State. He was a man who was involved in almost every part of American life. He eventually resigned from his post in 1860.
