The marimba has a long history. The name comes from the Bantu language. It is found all over sub-Saharan Africa. In Central America, the marimba is very special. Guatemala even named it their national instrument. In South America, people in Colombia and Ecuador play it too. For many Afro-Latino groups, the music shows their strength and pride.

Today, people play the marimba in many ways. You can hear it in big orchestras. You might see it in marching bands. Some people play it alone. The bars can be made of wood or a strong plastic. Rosewood is a very good wood for making bars. The bars are long for low notes. They are short for high notes. This helps make a wide range of sounds.
