arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Keiko Abe is a famous musician from Japan. She plays the marimba. A marimba is a wooden instrument with bars.

She began playing the xylophone in school. At age 13, she won a talent contest. She played on the radio and even had a TV show. She taught children how to play the xylophone on that show.

Keiko helped change how marimbas are made. She worked with the Yamaha Corporation for many years. She wanted the instrument to have a clear sound. She also wanted it to sound good in a group.

She helped make the marimba larger. It went from four octaves to five octaves. This new size is now the standard for solo players.

Keiko is also a composer. A composer is a person who writes music. She has written at least 70 pieces. Some of her songs include "Michi" and "Dream of the Cherry Blossoms." She also helps other people write new music. In 1993, she was the first woman in the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame.
