It is made of many wooden bars. Musicians strike these bars with sticks called mallets.

Below each bar sits a resonator pipe. These pipes help make the sound louder.

The marimba has a lower range than the xylophone. Its bars are often arranged like piano keys. This allows players to play many different notes. People use it in orchestras and marching bands. It is also a wonderful solo instrument.

Making a marimba requires great skill. The bars can be made of wood or fiberglass.

Rosewood is the best wood for a great sound. Some bars use a material called padauk. These bars are longer for low notes. They get shorter as the notes get higher. To tune a bar, a maker removes wood from the bottom. This makes the pitch go lower. Most players strike the bar just off the center. This creates the fullest sound possible.

The history of the marimba is very old. Its name comes from Bantu languages in Africa.

It is found all over sub-Saharan Africa. In Mexico, records show a marimba in 1545. Some believe it arrived via African people. Others think the Maya people created it. In 1680, Guatemala had records of marimbas with gourd resonators.

In 1892, Corazón de Jesús Borras Moreno made a modern version. He lived in Chiapas, Mexico. This new version had a double keyboard.

Many talented people changed how the marimba sounds. In 1850, Manuel Bolán Cruz made important changes. He replaced gourd resonators with wooden boxes.

He also made the legs longer for standing. In 1894, Sebastián Hurtado made a chromatic marimba. He used special Hormigo wood for the bars. His family started the Marimba Royal group. They played in Buffalo, New York, in 1908. This helped the world learn about the instrument. Later, American companies like J.C. Deagan adapted it. They used metal tubes for resonators instead.

Today, the marimba connects many different cultures. In South America, it is very important.

Afro-Latino groups use it to show pride. In Colombia, the marimba de chonta is popular. UNESCO calls this music a part of Colombian culture. In Ecuador, the marimba esmeraldeña is used in festivals.

In 2015, the Organization of American States honored it. They named it the Cultural Heritage of the Americas. You can now hear it in classical music too. Composers like Paul Creston wrote songs for it. It is truly a global treasure.
