Marie Sallé was a famous dancer and choreographer from France. She lived during the 1700s. Most dancers of her time focused on jumps and fast moves. Marie wanted to do something different. She used her whole body to act out deep feelings. This helped create a new style called ballet d'action. This style focused on telling a story through movement.

Marie learned to dance by watching her family. They were performers who traveled around France. She made her first big stage appearance in London in 1716. Later, she studied with famous dance teachers like Claude Balon. She practiced very hard every single day. In 1727, she began performing with the Paris Opera. She worked with many famous music makers during her career.

Marie was a very brave artist. She was the first woman to choreograph her own ballet. She also danced in the same show. In her famous work called Pygmalion, she played a statue. She wore simple Greek robes and sandals. This helped her act like a real character. Most dancers then wore heavy, stiff clothes. Marie chose light fabric so she could move easily.

Her new ideas about clothes caused a big stir. Many people in France were shocked by her style. They thought dancers must always wear big skirts and masks. Marie believed costumes should match the story being told. She even tried wearing clothes usually worn by men. This was a very bold choice for a woman then. She worked with great composers like George Frideric Handel.
