Making these pots is a long and careful process. First, the potter must find and collect clay once a year. In October, they gather the clay when it is dry. They mix the clay with special sands and water. Then, they use a tool called a pukis to shape the base. The potter builds the walls of the pot using long coils of clay. After the shape is ready, they must sand and polish it. They use a smooth stone to rub the surface until it is very shiny.

Maria learned her craft by watching her family members. When she was eleven, she watched her aunt, grandmother, and cousin. This was part of a way of learning by seeing. In the late 1800s, new types of metal pots became common. Because of this, making traditional clay pots was becoming less common. Maria and her family worked hard to experiment with new ways to make art. They wanted to preserve the special traditions of the Pueblo people.

Maria and Julian used a special method to get the black color. They used a technique called reduction firing. They placed the pots in a pit and covered them with metal sheets. They used cow chips and cedar wood to start a hot fire. To make the clay turn black, they smothered the fire with horse dung. This trapped the smoke inside the clay. This smoke creates different shades of black or gunmetal color.

Julian Martinez helped by painting designs on the polished pots. He used a mixture called slip to create patterns. One famous design is the Avanyu, which is a horned serpent. These designs often come from ancient Pueblo patterns. Today, many famous museums keep her work. You can find her pottery in the Smithsonian and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her art is a way to connect the past to the present.
