She was a leader in modern dance during the 20th century. Many people called her the "queen mother of black dance." She was also a scholar who studied anthropology. Anthropology is the study of people and their many cultures. Dunham believed that you cannot truly learn about dance without learning about people. She used her art to show how dance and culture fit together.

Dunham used a special way of studying to learn new things. She traveled to the Caribbean to study local dance and traditions. In 1935, she used fellowships to visit Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, and Trinidad. In Jamaica, she lived in a mountain village called Accompong. In Haiti, she watched people move during Vodun rituals. She did not just watch from far away. She learned the music, the songs, and the dance moves herself.

Her journey into dance and study began when she was young. She was born in Chicago on June 22, 1909. As a girl, she loved writing and dancing. At age 12, she even published a short story. By age 15, she organized a show to raise money for her church. She also opened a dance school for Black children while still in high school. These early steps helped her prepare for a big career.

Dunham was a very smart student at the University of Chicago. She earned a bachelor's degree in anthropology in 1936. She also wrote a master's thesis about the dances of Haiti. She was one of the first Black women to earn degrees there. Even though she was great at school, she chose to be a performer. She wanted to reach a much larger public through dance. She felt the stage was better than a quiet classroom.

She also led the Katherine Dunham Dance Company for almost 30 years. Her group was the only self-supported Black dance troupe in America then. Over her long life, she created more than ninety different dances. Her work helped people see the beauty of African-inspired dance.
