He was a person who changed the world of dance. He was a choreographer, which is someone who creates dance moves. He also founded and led his own ballet companies. Mitchell showed that people of all backgrounds could be great dancers. His life was full of hard work and big achievements. He is remembered for opening new doors in the arts.

Mitchell’s journey started with many different jobs. He grew up in Harlem, New York. When he was 12, he had to help his family with money. He worked as a shoe-shiner and a newspaper delivery boy. He also mopped floors and worked in a meat shop. Later, a counselor helped him get into a performing arts high school. He then won a scholarship to study at the School of American Ballet. This training helped him reach the highest levels of dance.

In 1955, Mitchell made history with the New York City Ballet. He was the very first African-American dancer in that company. By 1956, he became a principal dancer, which is a top role. He performed in famous ballets like The Nutcracker and Agon. A famous creator named George Balanchine even made a dance just for him. Some people complained when he danced with white partners. However, Mitchell continued to dance these roles all over the world. He even appeared on The Tonight Show in 1968.

After his time in New York, Mitchell wanted to help his community. In 1969, he started the Dance Theatre of Harlem.
