He was born on May 13, 1930, in the Quindío Department. His family were peasants who grew coffee in the mountains. During the 1940s and 1950s, Colombia went through a time called "La Violencia." This was a period of much fighting between political groups. Marulanda's family supported the Liberal Party during these hard years. He eventually changed his views and joined the Communist Party of Colombia.

Marulanda lived a life of fighting and hiding. He took a new name to honor a dead union leader. His comrades gave him the nickname "Tirofijo." This name came from his skill at aiming firearms. He worked with a leader named Jacobo Arenas. Together, they led groups of fighters in rural areas. They often lived in places far from the big cities. One such place was a small area called Marquetalia.

Conflict grew between Marulanda's group and the government. In 1953, a General named Gustavo Rojas led a coup. Most fighters stopped fighting after he offered them peace. However, some people were killed during this time. This made Marulanda and his friends feel unsafe. In May 1964, the Colombian Army started "Operation Marquetalia." They attacked the area to stop the fighters. This attack did not stop the group from existing.

After the attack, the survivors moved to new places. They formed a group called the "Bloque Sur" in May 1964. Later, in 1966, they officially became the FARC. Marulanda and Jacobo Arenas were the main leaders. The FARC stood for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. The United States government considered Marulanda a terrorist and a kidnapper. In 2006, the United States offered a $5 million reward for him.

Marulanda lived for many years as a leader. He was never caught by the law or the army. He died of a heart attack on March 26, 2008. A Colombian magazine named Revista Semana first shared the news. The Colombian Defense Minister, Juan Manuel Santos, also spoke about it. After Marulanda died, Alfonso Cano became the new leader. His life remains a major part of Colombian history.
