He was born in Salvador, Bahia, in 1911. His father, Augusto, was an immigrant from Italy. His mother, Maria Rita, was a descendant of people from Sudan. Carlos grew up in a Catholic home. Marighella spent many years fighting for his political ideas. He was arrested several times by the police. In 1932, he was arrested for writing a poem. In 1936, he was arrested again during the time of President Getúlio Vargas. He spent a year in jail during that time. He was released later by a special measure called "macedada." He was caught again in 1939 and stayed in jail until 1945. After he was released, he was elected as a federal deputy. He lost his office in 1948 when his party was banned.

In the 1950s, Marighella traveled to China. He went there between 1953 and 1954 to learn about their revolution. Later, a military group took control of Brazil in 1964. Marighella was arrested at a movie theater in Rio de Janeiro. He was released by a court order the next year. He decided that fighting with weapons was the best way to stop the military rule. He left his old party and started a new group called the ALN. This group was known as the Ação Libertadora Nacional.

The ALN carried out many different actions to fight the government. They performed bank robberies and high-profile kidnappings. In September 1969, members of the ALN kidnapped the U.S. ambassador, Charles Burke Elbrick. They worked together with another group called MR-8. Marighella also wrote a very important book. It was called the *Minimanual of the Urban Guerrilla*. This book gave advice on how to fight a military regime. It was first published in North America in July 1970.

The police wanted to stop Marighella for good. They organized an ambush in São Paulo. On November 4, 1969, at 8:00 pm, the police shot him at Alameda Casa Branca. He was buried in a cemetery in Salvador, Bahia. A famous architect named Oscar Niemeyer designed his tombstone.
