Manuel Marulanda Vélez was a central figure in the history of modern Colombia. He was the founder and primary leader of the FARC-EP. This name stands for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – Army of the People. Marulanda was a Marxist-Leninist leader. This means he followed a specific political ideology focused on revolutionary change. His actions shaped decades of conflict between guerrilla groups and the Colombian government.

Marulanda was born on May 13, 1930, in the Quindío Department. This area is a coffee-growing region in west-central Colombia. He grew up in a peasant family. During the 1940s and 1950s, his family supported the Liberal Party. This was during a period of intense civil conflict known as "La Violencia." This era began after the assassination of the Liberal leader Jorge Eliécer Gaitán. Marulanda's political views changed during these years. He eventually joined the Communist Party of Colombia (PCC).

Marulanda took a new name to honor a murdered union leader. His fellow fighters gave him the nickname "Tirofijo." This nickname reportedly came from his ability to aim firearms very accurately. He worked closely with a political cadre named Luis Morantes. Morantes was also known by his nom de guerre, Jacobo Arenas. Together, they led guerrilla fighters into rural areas. They eventually settled in a region called Marquetalia. This area became known as a self-sufficient armed enclave.

Political tension grew between these rural groups and the Colombian government. In 1953, General Gustavo Rojas led a coup against President Laureano Gómez. Rojas offered amnesty to many irregular fighters. Most Liberal fighters accepted the peace offer. However, the reported murder of some demobilized individuals made Marulanda and his comrades uneasy. They continued to distrust the government and the Colombian Army. After the National Front agreement was signed in 1958, the government viewed these enclaves as dangerous.

In May 1964, the Colombian government launched "Operation Marquetalia." This was a large-scale attack by the Colombian Army to overrun the Marquetalia region. The military attack was mostly ineffective at stopping the fighters. Instead, it caused the guerrillas to scatter to different locations. On May 27, 1964, the survivors formed a group called the "Bloque Sur" or Southern Bloc. This group served as a direct precursor to the FARC. In 1966, the FARC was officially founded with Marulanda and Jacobo Arenas as leaders.

Marulanda's leadership lasted for many decades. The United States government viewed him as a terrorist, an assassin, and a kidnapper. Officials also linked him to racketeering and drug cartels. In March 2006, the U.S. Attorney General announced a significant bounty. The State Department placed a $5 million reward on his head. This money was offered for information leading to his capture. Despite these efforts, Marulanda was never apprehended by authorities.

Marulanda died of a heart attack on March 26, 2008, at 18:30 hours UTC. The news of his death was not immediately public. The Colombian magazine Revista Semana first reported it on May 24, 2008. Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos confirmed the death through a reliable informant. He also mentioned that three bombing raids had targeted Marulanda around that time. A member of the FARC Central High Command, Timoleón Jiménez, also confirmed the cause was heart failure.

After Marulanda passed away, the leadership of the FARC changed. Alfonso Cano took over as the new commander-in-chief. Marulanda's life remains a subject of study in Colombian history and culture. For example, the actor Iván Rodríguez portrayed a character inspired by him in the TV series Tres Caínes. His journey from a peasant in Quindío to a global figure illustrates the complex history of political conflict in South America.
