Manitou is a very important idea for Algonquian peoples.

It is seen as a fundamental life force. Many people believe this force is everywhere at once. It exists in living things and the environment. It can even be found in certain events. Some traditions use the name Gitche Manitou for a supreme being. This refers to a great or highest spirit. This belief system helps people understand the world around them.

Certain people in these cultures act as medicine healers.

They use their connection to manitou to help others. They might try to heal an illness. They may also try to change the weather. Healers often enter a trance to talk to spirits. They do this through singing or dancing. They might also use drumbeats or hallucinogens. These tools help them communicate with the spiritual world.

Other people can also seek a connection to spirits.

They might go on a special journey called a vision quest. During this time, they often pray or fast. They may also remove themselves from other people. A person on a quest might see an animal. They might hear a voice or see an object. This visitor then becomes their own guardian spirit.

History shows that the word was used long ago.

In 1585, Thomas Harriot wrote a list of words. He included the word mantóac to mean gods and goddesses. This was part of a glossary for the Roanoke language. Similar words exist in nearly all Algonquian languages. The terms gitche and manitou existed before Europeans arrived. After contact, groups like the Ojibwe used Gitche Manitou for the supreme being.

The name Manitou is found in many North American places.

Lake Manitoba gets its name from a Cree or Ojibwe term. It refers to a strait called manitou-wapow. This name describes the sound of waves hitting rocks. Manitoulin Island is also a very sacred place. The Odawa call it the island of the Great Spirit. There are also North and South Manitou Islands in Michigan.

These names keep the history of the word alive today.
