Many people helped with this work. At its peak, nearly 130,000 people worked on it. It cost almost 2 billion dollars. Major General Leslie Groves led the Army part. He was the head of the Manhattan District. A scientist named J. Robert Oppenheimer led the Los Alamos Laboratory. This lab designed the bombs.

To make the bombs, they needed special fuel. They used uranium and plutonium.

They built large plants to make these fuels. One site was in Tennessee. Another site was in Washington. These sites used large reactors to make plutonium.

In 1945, they tested the first bomb. This was the Trinity test in New Mexico.

The project also made two types of bombs. One was called Little Boy. The other was called Fat Man. These weapons were used in August 1945. After the war, this work helped start new science and new ways to use power.
