He was the head of the Manhattan District. A scientist named J. Robert Oppenheimer led the Los Alamos Laboratory. This lab designed the bombs.

To make the bombs, they needed special fuel. They used uranium and plutonium.

Scientists Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann discovered nuclear fission. Later, Lise Meitner and Otto Frisch explained how it worked. Because of this, people feared Germany might build an atomic bomb first. In 1939, Leo Szilard and Eugene Wigner wrote a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. They asked him to start research into these powerful new weapons. This led to the creation of committees to study uranium.

The scientific foundation for the project began with the discovery of nuclear fission. In 1938, Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann discovered this process. Lise Meitner and Otto Frisch later provided the theoretical explanation for how it worked.

Because of these discoveries, there was a fear that Germany might develop an atomic bomb first. In August 1939, Leo Szilard and Eugene Wigner drafted the Einstein–Szilard letter. They asked President Franklin D. Roosevelt to accelerate research into nuclear chain reactions. This led to the creation of the Advisory Committee on Uranium. This committee warned the President that uranium could create bombs with unprecedented destructiveness.

As the program grew, it required a complex leadership structure.

The project resulted in two distinct weapon designs. The first was named Little Boy, which was a gun-type weapon using enriched uranium. The second was named Fat Man, which used plutonium and an implosion method.

The implosion design was much more complex. It required the use of specialized explosive lenses to compress the plutonium core. Initially, the Fat Man design was a lower priority fallback option. However, researchers discovered in 1944 that the plutonium from Hanford was not suitable for a gun-type bomb. This discovery made the complex implosion method necessary for the plutonium weapon.

The project reached a major milestone with the Trinity test. Conducted on July 16, 1945, at the White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico, it was the first nuclear device ever detonated. The test used an implosion-type bomb. Following this successful test, the project was responsible for delivering the Little Boy and Fat Man bombs. These weapons were used in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. The project also conducted intelligence gathering through Operation Alsos. This operation involved personnel traveling through Europe to collect nuclear materials and documents.

Even after World War II, the legacy of the Manhattan Project continued. The project conducted further weapons testing at Bikini Atoll during Operation Crossroads. It also helped establish the modern network of national laboratories. The research supported new medical advancements in the field of radiology. Additionally, the project's work laid the groundwork for the development of the nuclear navy. Control over American atomic research remained with the military until January 1947. At that time, the United States Atomic Energy Commission was formed to take over these responsibilities.
