This "nuclear dream" did not come true. High construction costs and falling electricity demand caused reactor orders to decline. Social problems, such as the nuclear arms race and waste disposal issues, also slowed progress. Major accidents like the Three Mile Island accident in 1979 and the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 caused widespread public opposition.
Today, the legacy of the Atomic Age is complex. It is difficult to separate peaceful civilian uses from military or terrorist applications. For example, radioactive waste can be used to make "dirty bombs." However, nuclear technology remains vital in fields like nuclear medicine. The era changed how humanity views energy, safety, and global politics. It remains a period of profound scientific achievement and significant responsibility.
