A man named J. Robert Oppenheimer led the lab. He gave the test the name Trinity. A man named Kenneth Bainbridge directed the test itself.

The team used a metal called plutonium. They had to use a special design to make it work. This was called an implosion design. It used explosives to squeeze the metal. This made the metal very dense.

On July 16, 1945, the test happened. It took place at 5:29 a.m. The test released a lot of power. It also made a large cloud of fallout.

Many people were at the site. About 425 people were there that weekend. The site is now a National Historic Landmark.
