Man Ray was a very famous and creative artist.

He was born Emmanuel Radnitzky on August 27, 1890, in South Philadelphia. His family later changed their name to Ray to avoid unfair treatment. He eventually chose the name Man Ray for his own art career. He worked with many different tools to make his art. He was a painter, a photographer, and a maker of objects.

He became famous for making "rayographs." These were special photos made without using a camera at all. To make them, he placed objects directly onto light-sensitive paper. He also used a technique called solarization with his assistant, Lee Miller. This helped them reinvent how photos could look. He even used an airbrush to paint on glass. He sometimes used a spray-gun to add detail to his drawings. He also made "readymades," which are ordinary objects that artists change into art.

His early life in America helped shape his unique style.

His father was a tailor who worked from their family home. His mother loved designing clothes and making patchwork from fabric scraps. Because of this, Man Ray often used sewing tools in his art. He included things like needles, pins, and sewing machines in his work. He even created a special chess set as an artist. He studied drafting at Boys' High School in Brooklyn from 1904 to 1909. Later, he studied at the Ferrer Centre to improve his drawing skills.

Man Ray moved to Paris in July 1921 to work.

He helped start the Société Anonyme, which was a modern art museum. This collection was later given to the Yale University Art Gallery. His work shows how tools from one job can become art. For example, the tools from his father's tailoring became his art subjects. He also showed how science and light can make beautiful pictures. Even though he lived a long time ago, people still study him. Man Ray passed away in Paris on November 18, 1976. He remains a very important name in the history of art.
