A makeup brush is a specialized tool used to apply cosmetics or perform face painting.

These tools consist of a handle, usually made of wood or plastic, and a head of bristles. The primary purpose of a brush is to facilitate the even application and blending of products on the skin. When an artist uses the correct brush, the cosmetic materials blend more effectively for a professional finish. Because different areas of the face require different techniques, brushes come in a vast variety of shapes and sizes.

The tips can be chiseled, straight, angular, round, flat, or tapered to suit specific needs.

Brushes are categorized by the specific area of the face they target. Face brushes include the foundation brush, which features long, flat bristles and a tapered tip. For powders, artists may use a fluffy powder brush or a large fan brush. A fan brush is often made of natural fibers and is fanned out 180 degrees to cover a large perimeter. This tool is useful for dusting off fallouts or applying highlighter to the highest points of the face. Other face tools include the blush brush, which has a rounded head, and the Kabuki brush. There are two types of Kabuki brushes: Flat Top and Angled. Both are densely packed to provide full coverage when applying liquid foundations.

Eye makeup requires even more precision through specialized tools. The flat shader eye brush, also known as a cat's tongue brush, is used to pack powder or cream eyeshadow onto the lid. For more detail, an angled shader brush made of natural fibers can apply darker shades to the outer corners. Blending is achieved with fluffy brushes that use natural bristles to remove harsh edges for a seamless effect. Smaller tools include the crease brush, which has a tapered cut to blend colors within the eye crease without moving the pigment too much. For very small areas, a pencil brush provides control, while a pointed eyeliner brush uses synthetic fibers to create sharp, winged lines.

Lip and brow application also relies on distinct brush architectures. To create a crisp outline on the lips, an artist uses a lip liner brush. A standard lip brush is then used to fill in the color for even application. For eyebrows, a duo brow brush is a multitasking tool that uses an angled end for lining and a spoolie end for blending. This tool can work with powders, liquids, and creams. Additionally, lash and brow combs are used to manage hair; a lash comb specifically helps remove clumping to prevent a spidery appearance in the lashes.

The performance of a brush is heavily influenced by its bristle material.

Synthetic bristles are the most common material found in drugstores and specialty shops. These are made from plastic, nylon, or other dyed synthetic fibers. Synthetic brushes are ideal for liquid and cream products because they do not absorb as much product as natural hair. They are also highly durable, do not degrade easily, and are considered cruelty-free. Because they are not as fragile, they often last longer than their natural counterparts.

Natural bristles are often preferred in the cosmetic industry due to their unique physical properties. These bristles are frequently dark in color and are not always soft to the touch. Because natural hair is porous, it can pick up pigments more effectively and distribute them evenly. This makes them the superior choice for powder products. However, natural bristles can "drink up" liquid or cream products, making them less efficient for those specific textures. It is also noted that some natural animal hairs may cause allergic reactions in certain users.

There are many different sources for natural bristles used in high-quality tools.

Common types include hair from goats, ponies, squirrels, and badgers. Other sources include weasels, which are also known as red sable, and the highly regarded Kolinsky sable. The choice of animal hair affects how the brush holds pigment and how it feels during application. By understanding the relationship between bristle material, brush shape, and product type, an artist can master the complex system of cosmetic application.
