He was born on June 11, 1920, at the Narayanhiti Palace. His father was King Tribhuvan. For a long time, a group called the Ranas held the real power in Nepal. This meant the royal family lived in the palace with very little control. Mahendra studied politics, history, and culture privately inside the palace walls. He eventually became king on March 13, 1955.

During his early years as king, Nepal began to change quickly.

He helped the country open up to the rest of the world. Before this, the Rana rulers had kept Nepal isolated for 104 years. Mahendra's government helped start important things like the Nepal Rastra Bank. They also set up the Supreme Court to handle laws. In 1956, the government made close ties with China. This included a gift of 60 million rupees from the Chinese government.

These changes helped the economy and politics of the nation grow.

In 1959, Nepal tried a new way to run its government.

A new constitution was made to start a parliamentary system. This allowed people to vote for leaders in two different houses. The first democratic election was held in early 1959. A group called the Nepali Congress won most of the seats. Their leader, B.P. Koirala, became the prime minister. He took his oath of office in June 1959. This was a very important moment for democracy in Nepal.

However, things changed again in December 1960.

King Mahendra used his emergency powers to take full control. He claimed the elected government was not doing its job well. He dismissed the cabinet and dissolved the parliament. He also banned political parties and put some leaders in jail. This event is often called a coup d'état. After this, he introduced a new system called the Panchayat system. This system was designed to be a way of ruling without political parties.

It was a system of councils that went from villages up to the national level.

Mahendra ruled with this Panchayat system for 28 years.

Under his new 1962 constitution, the king held most of the power. He also made many symbols for the country official. He recognized the Hindu religion as the national religion. He also introduced the modern national flag and the national anthem. The constitution named the cow as the national animal and the Danphe as the national bird.
