This was a new way to run the country. It lasted for many years. Under this system, the king held the most power.

During his early years as king, Nepal began to change quickly. 
In 1959, Nepal tried a new way to run its government. A new constitution was made to start a parliamentary system. This allowed people to vote for leaders in two different houses. The first democratic election was held in early 1959. A group called the Nepali Congress won most of the seats. Their leader, B.P. Koirala, became the prime minister. He took his oath of office in June 1959. This was a very important moment for democracy in Nepal.
However, things changed again in December 1960. 
Mahendra ruled with this Panchayat system for 28 years. Under his new 1962 constitution, the king held most of the power. He also made many symbols for the country official. He recognized the Hindu religion as the national religion. He also introduced the modern national flag and the national anthem. The constitution named the cow as the national animal and the Danphe as the national bird. 
Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev was the King of Nepal from 1955 until 1972. 
Mahendra was born on June 11, 1920, at the Narayanhiti Palace. 

After King Tribhuvan died, Mahendra became king on March 13, 1955. His official coronation occurred on May 2, 1956. This delay was due to a year of mourning for his father. Early in his reign, Mahendra appointed Tanka Prasad Acharya as prime minister. This period saw the creation of the Nepal Rastra Bank and the Supreme Court. The government also built strong ties with China. In October 1956, the Chinese government provided 60 million rupees to Nepal. These developments helped integrate Nepal into the global community.
In 1959, Nepal attempted to move toward a parliamentary system. A Constitution Drafting Commission prepared a new law for the country. This constitution created a bicameral legislature. It had a lower house called the House of Representatives and an upper house called the General Assembly. The first democratic elections were held in 1959. The Nepali Congress party won a two-thirds majority in these elections. Their leader, B. P. Koirala, became the first elected prime minister. This was a significant step toward representative government.
However, the political structure changed drastically in December 1960. 
To replace the old system, Mahendra introduced the Panchayat system.
During the Panchayat era, Mahendra established many national symbols.
Mahendra's reign left a lasting impact on Nepal's infrastructure and identity.
