Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev was the King of Nepal from 1955 until 1972.

His reign marked a major turning point for the nation. He moved Nepal away from a long period of isolation. For 104 years, the Rana dynasty had ruled the country. The Ranas kept Nepal closed off from much of the rest of the world. Mahendra's leadership changed the political, economic, and industrial landscape of Nepal. He sought to modernize the country while maintaining strong royal authority.

Mahendra was born on June 11, 1920, at the Narayanhiti Palace.

He was the eldest son of King Tribhuvan and Queen Kanti. Because the Ranas held the real power, the royal family lived as captives in the palace. Mahendra did not attend a formal school. Instead, he received a private education within the palace walls. He studied politics, economics, history, and Nepali culture. He married Indra Rajya Lakshmi in 1940, but she died in 1950. In 1952, he married her younger sister, Ratna Rajya Lakshmi Devi.

This marriage caused tension with his father, King Tribhuvan.

After King Tribhuvan died, Mahendra became king on March 13, 1955.

His official coronation occurred on May 2, 1956. This delay was due to a year of mourning for his father. Early in his reign, Mahendra appointed Tanka Prasad Acharya as prime minister. This period saw the creation of the Nepal Rastra Bank and the Supreme Court. The government also built strong ties with China. In October 1956, the Chinese government provided 60 million rupees to Nepal. These developments helped integrate Nepal into the global community.

In 1959, Nepal attempted to move toward a parliamentary system.

A Constitution Drafting Commission prepared a new law for the country. This constitution created a bicameral legislature. It had a lower house called the House of Representatives and an upper house called the General Assembly. The first democratic elections were held in 1959. The Nepali Congress party won a two-thirds majority in these elections. Their leader, B. P. Koirala, became the first elected prime minister. This was a significant step toward representative government.

However, the political structure changed drastically in December 1960.

King Mahendra used his emergency powers to conduct a coup d'état. He claimed the elected government was corrupt and failed to maintain order. He dissolved the parliament and dismissed the cabinet. He also banned all political parties and imprisoned B. P. Koirala. This ended the brief period of parliamentary democracy. Mahendra took direct control of the state to establish an autocratic regime.

To replace the old system, Mahendra introduced the Panchayat system.

This was a partyless political system based on councils. It functioned through four tiers: village, district, national, and zonal levels. The 1962 constitution institutionalized this structure. It created a single legislative body called the Rashtriya Panchayat. Under this law, the king held sovereign power. He could also amend the constitution through royal proclamation. This system remained the primary way Nepal was governed until 1990.

During the Panchayat era, Mahendra established many national symbols.

The 1962 constitution introduced the modern national flag. It also recognized the Hindu religion as the national religion. The king designated the cow as the national animal and the Danphe as the national bird. He also made the Lali gurans the national flower. The constitution officially recognized Nepali as the language and Devanagari as the script. These symbols helped create a unified national identity during his 28-year rule.

Mahendra's reign left a lasting impact on Nepal's infrastructure and identity.

He oversaw the development of major projects like the Mahendra Highway. He also promoted national campaigns to encourage people to return to rural villages. His era saw the birth of modern institutions like the first maternity hospital. While his political methods were autocratic, his reign transformed Nepal from an isolated kingdom into a modernizing state. The Panchayat system he built lasted for decades after his death in 1972.
