The Maghreb is a large region in northwest Africa.

It is often called the Arab Maghreb or the Greater Maghreb. This area includes the countries of Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia. It also includes the territory of Western Sahara. As of 2018, more than 100 million people lived in this part of the world. The region sits in the western part of the Arab world. It is different from the Mashriq, which is the eastern part of the Arab world.

The land here has many different features. The Atlas Mountains stretch across the northern part of the region.

A huge part of the Sahara Desert is also located here. This desert can act as a natural barrier. It makes it hard for people to move between the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa. Long ago, the Sahara changed very quickly. Around 3,500 BC, the desert grew much faster. This happened because of small changes in the tilt of the Earth's orbit. This change made the land much drier.

Many different groups have lived in the Maghreb throughout history. The Berber people have lived in western North Africa for a very long time. Some records show they were there as early as 10,000 BC. Later, many Arab groups arrived in the region. This changed the culture and the language of the people. Many powerful empires also ruled the land at different times. The Romans had a large influence here.

Other groups like the Vandals and the Byzantines also ruled. The Ottoman Empire controlled some parts of the region too.

The name Maghreb comes from an Arabic word. It means "the place where the sun sets." This is because the land is in the west.

In the past, people divided the area into three parts. They called the near Maghrib, the middle Maghrib, and the far Maghrib. The far Maghrib reached all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. Many famous buildings were built during the Islamic era. The Great Mosque of Kairouan in Tunisia is a very old example.

Today, the countries of the Maghreb try to work together. In 1989, they formed the Arab Maghreb Union. This group wanted to help the countries trade with each other. They wanted to create a common market for everyone. However, this union has not been very active lately. There are still some disagreements between certain countries. For example, Algeria and Morocco have tensions over Western Sahara. These disagreements can make it hard for the countries to reach their goals together.
