The land has many different parts. The Atlas Mountains stretch across the north.

A large part of the Sahara Desert is also here. This desert can make it hard to travel. Long ago, the desert grew very fast. This changed how people lived in the area.

Many groups of people have lived here. The Berber people have been there for a long time. They lived in the mountains and the desert. Later, Arab groups arrived. This changed the culture and the language. Many different empires also ruled the land. These included the Romans and the Byzantines.

The Ottoman Empire also ruled parts of it.

The name Maghreb comes from an Arabic word. It means "the place where the sun sets." This is because the land is in the west.
