The word comes from an Arabic root meaning "to learn" or "to study." In the Arabic language, it can mean any kind of school. This includes public, private, or religious schools for all ages. In English, the term usually refers to Islamic institutions of learning.

These schools often have their own specific buildings and ways of teaching. They help people gain deep knowledge in many different subjects.

Students in a madrasa follow a specific path of study. Many focused on Sharia, which is Islamic law, and fiqh, or jurisprudence. Some schools also taught the "rational sciences" to their students. This included subjects like math, astronomy, and geography.

In some early settings, students even practiced horse-riding and calligraphy. They might study the Qur'an or learn about genealogy and first aid. This variety of learning helped create a very educated society.

History shows that these schools have existed for a long time. The very first lessons happened at the estate of Zayd ibn Arqam. Later, a school called "Suffa" was set up in Medina.

In the 11th century, a man named Nizam al-Mulk helped them grow. He was a vizier who built a network of official madrasas. These schools spread across Iran, Mesopotamia, and Khorasan. This helped start a large system of formal education.

Many famous buildings and dates mark the history of the madrasa. The al-Qarawiyyin in Morocco was founded in the year 859.

Madrasas connect to many parts of life and culture. They were often built using a special fund called a waqf. This was a type of charitable trust used to support the school.

In the Ottoman Empire, a madrasa might be part of a larger group. This group could include a mosque and a public bathhouse. These institutions helped keep literacy rates very high during the Middle Ages. They were a central part of how knowledge was passed down through generations.
