It is named after John Madden, a legendary Pro Football Hall of Fame coach and commentator. The franchise is famous for its realistic simulation of the sport. It features detailed playbooks, deep player statistics, and voice commentary. This commentary mimics the style of a real NFL television broadcast. The series has had a massive impact on the culture of football. Many real-life players and coaches have been influenced by these games.

Developing the game was an incredibly complex process.

Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins first approached John Madden in 1984. Because Madden was afraid of flying, the two met on an Amtrak train. They spent two days discussing football from sunrise to midnight. Madden wanted the game to be a sophisticated educational tool. He insisted that the game include 11 players per team. He believed that without 11 players, the game was not real football. This requirement made the game very difficult for early computers to run.

The first version of John Madden Football debuted in 1988 for Apple II computers. The development took three years, which was much longer than usual. This delay happened because the project was so complex. The team used the 1980 Oakland Raiders playbook for the game. A writer named Frank Cooney helped create numerical skill ratings for the players. These ratings ensured that players performed correctly during gameplay. Early versions used only 8 to 12 different player traits. Today, modern versions can include more than 200 different traits.

As technology improved, the series moved to different gaming consoles. In 1990, a version was developed for the Sega Genesis. This version was a massive hit for Electronic Arts and Sega. It sold 400,000 copies, which was much higher than the expected 75,000. The game helped the Genesis console gain market share against the Super NES. Later, EA centralized its development by acquiring Tiburon Entertainment. This allowed the company to manage the series more effectively in-house.

One of the most significant additions was Franchise Mode, introduced in 1998. This mode allows players to act as a general manager. You can manage player contracts, free agency, and draft picks. You can also act as a head coach by choosing players and running practices. Players can manage any of the 32 NFL franchises. You can even participate in a 49-round fantasy draft. Some versions allow you to play for 30 years. You can even attempt to reach the Hall of Fame.

The series has also introduced many unique gameplay features over the years. Madden NFL 2000 included a play editor and an arcade mode. Madden NFL 2001 featured a "Great Games" mode to unlock stadiums and teams. In Madden NFL 2002, players could use the Create-A-Team feature. This allowed users to build their own custom teams.

These features kept the gameplay fresh for millions of fans.

The economic success of the franchise is truly enormous. As of 2021, the series had sold over 150 million copies. The franchise has generated more than $4 billion in total sales. This makes it one of the most profitable video game franchises in history. From its difficult beginnings on an Amtrak train to its global success, Madden NFL remains a cornerstone of sports gaming.
