It is named after John Madden, a famous coach and announcer. The games are very popular and help people learn about the sport. They include detailed playbooks and player statistics. You can even hear voices that sound like a real TV broadcast. Many players and coaches use these games to study the sport. The series has sold over 150 million copies as of 2021.

Making the game was a very big job. Trip Hawkins, the founder of Electronic Arts, wanted to make a computer version of football. He first talked to John Madden in 1984. Because Madden was afraid of flying, they met on an Amtrak train. They spent two days learning football plays and strategies from sunrise to midnight. Madden wanted the game to be as realistic as possible. He insisted that every team must have 11 players on the field. He said that if there were not 11 players, it was not real football.

The first version of the game arrived in 1988 for Apple II computers. It took a long time to finish because it was so complex. Developers worked for three years to make it right. They used real plays from the 1980 Oakland Raiders. A writer named Frank Cooney helped create numerical ratings for players. These ratings helped players perform correctly in the game. In the beginning, players had only 8 to 12 different traits. Today, those numbers can grow to more than 200 different traits.

As time went on, the games became even better. In 1990, a version was made for the Sega Genesis console. This version was a huge success and sold 400,000 copies. The series grew to include many different ways to play. In 1998, a special feature called Franchise Mode was added. In this mode, you act like a general manager. You can trade players and make draft picks. You can also manage contracts and hire or fire coaches. You can even try to reach the Hall of Fame.

The series has changed a lot over the years. Some versions have a play editor or a way to create your own team. Madden NFL 2001 even had a mode called "Great Games" to unlock new stadiums. The games have helped many different gaming consoles become popular. Even though the games have had some technical bugs, people still love them. They remain one of the most successful sports games ever made. The series continues to be a major part of sports culture.
