John Madden was one of the most famous leaders in American football history. He was a highly successful head coach for the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to 1978. During his ten seasons, he led the team to eight playoff appearances and seven division titles. Most importantly, he led the Raiders to their very first Super Bowl title in Super Bowl XI. Before he was a famous coach, Madden was a talented student-athlete. He grew up in Minnesota and later moved to California. He played football at the College of San Mateo and Grays Harbor College. Eventually, he transferred to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. There, he played both offense and defense for the Mustangs. He was even a catcher on the baseball team. Madden earned two degrees in education from Cal Poly. His senior research project focused on using weights to help athletes run faster. Although he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1958, a knee injury ended his playing career before he could play a professional game.

Madden's path to coaching started at the college level. In 1960, he became an assistant coach at Allan Hancock College. He was promoted to head coach there in 1962. After that, he served as a defensive assistant coach at San Diego State. In 1967, he joined the Oakland Raiders as a linebackers coach. This led to his big break on February 4, 1969. At only 32 years old, he became the youngest head coach in the league at that time. He stayed with the Raiders for ten years. He became the winningest coach in the history of the franchise.

After he stopped coaching in 1979, Madden found a new way to share his love for football. He became a color commentator, which is a person who explains the game on television. He was very good at this job and won 16 Sports Emmy Awards. He worked for all four major American television networks: CBS, Fox, ABC, and NBC. He famously traveled to games by bus. He even had a very long streak of 476 consecutive weekend broadcast appearances. He eventually retired from the television booth in 2009 after calling Super Bowl XLIII.

Many people know John Madden through things they use at home. He lent his name and expertise to the Madden NFL video game series. This became the best-selling American football video game franchise in the world. His work helped make football exciting for people watching on TV and playing on consoles. Because of his many achievements, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006. He remains a legendary figure in the world of sports. His life showed how one person can impact many different parts of a game.
