Al Davis was a very important leader in professional football. He spent 39 years running the Oakland Raiders. He was the owner and the man who made many big decisions. Davis is famous for his motto, "Just win, baby." This simple phrase showed his focus on success. Under his leadership, the Raiders became a very popular and winning team. They won three Super Bowls, which are the biggest championship games in the sport.

Davis worked in many different ways to help football teams. He was the only person to hold almost every job in the sport. He worked as a scout to find new players. He served as an assistant coach and a head coach. He even worked as a commissioner for a whole league. Later, he became the owner of a team. This shows how much he understood every part of the game.

His journey began in Brockton, Massachusetts. He was born on July 4, 1929, to a Jewish family. His father, Louis Davis, moved the family to Brooklyn, New York, in 1934. Louis worked in the garment trade and helped his sons go to college. As a young man, Al went to Syracuse University. He was not a star athlete there, but he loved studying football. He would watch practices and take many notes to learn how to win.

Davis had many jobs in different places. In 1953, he coached a military team at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. He led them to eight wins and only two losses. Later, he worked at The Citadel in South Carolina. He also helped the University of Southern California, known as USC. One famous story is about how he signed player Lance Alworth. He ran onto the field and signed the player right under the goalposts!

Al Davis also used his power to fight for fairness. He believed all players should be treated the same. He refused to play games in cities where Black and white players stayed in different hotels. He was a leader in the fight for civil rights in football. He was the first owner to hire a Black head coach, Art Shell. He also hired a Latino head coach named Tom Flores. He was the first to hire a woman, Amy Trask, as a chief executive.
