In these games, players act like directors for virtual people called "Sims." You can build custom houses or place them in pre-made homes. Your job is to manage their moods and satisfy their many desires. Most of the games are sandbox games, which means they have no set goals. You are free to play however you like. This freedom is why so many people enjoy the series.

Playing the game involves many small, interesting steps. You start by creating your Sims and giving them a place to live. You can watch them go through different life stages. For example, The Sims 2 lets Sims grow from infancy to old age. In that game, you can also use an aspiration system. This system gives Sims wants and fears based on their unique personalities. Completing tasks helps them earn points to buy special rewards.

Game designer Will Wright created the very first game. He wanted to build a "virtual doll house." This idea came from a hard time in his life. He lost his home during the Oakland firestorm in 1991. Rebuilding his life inspired him to make a game about life. At first, the directors at Maxis were not sure about his idea. They gave him very little money or support. Later, Electronic Arts bought Maxis and helped the series grow.

Since the first game came out in 2000, the series has grown huge. The first game sold 16 million copies by February 2005. The Sims 3 was also a big hit in 2009. It sold 1.4 million copies in just its first week. Today, the whole franchise has sold nearly 200 million copies worldwide. There are many different versions for computers and consoles. Some games, like The Sims 4, are even free to play now. New projects like Project Rene are also being made.

This series is part of a larger group of games. It started with a game called SimCity in 1989. The Sims uses ideas from books about architecture and psychology. It even uses a model of human needs to help the artificial intelligence work. You might know other games where you build cities or manage people. The Sims takes those ideas and focuses on the lives of individuals. It turns the simple act of living into a huge, digital world.
