These bugs are native to the island of Madagascar. This island sits off the coast of the African mainland. In the wild, you can find them hiding in rotting logs. Unlike most other cockroaches, these insects do not have wings. They are still excellent climbers, though. They can even scale smooth surfaces like glass.

These insects make a loud sound to protect themselves. This sound is called a hiss. It can sound like a rainstick or a rattlesnake. Most insects make noise by rubbing body parts together. This is called stridulation. However, hissing cockroaches do things differently. They forcefully push air out through tiny holes called spiracles. These holes are mostly located on the fourth segment of their abdomen. This hiss helps scare away predators that want to eat them.

There are different kinds of hisses for different jobs. A disturbance hiss is used to scare things away. All cockroaches from the fourth instar stage or older can do this. The fourth instar is the fourth time they molt. Males use two other special sounds. They use a hiss to attract females. They also use a fighting hiss to settle disputes over territory. You can tell males apart from females by their thick, hairy antennae. They also have very large bumps on their pronotum.

These cockroaches have a unique way of having babies. This process is called ovoviviparity. The female carries her egg case, or ootheca, inside her body. The young nymphs only come out after they have grown inside her. This helps keep the babies safe. In a home setting, these insects can live for up to 5 years. They mostly eat vegetable material to stay healthy. Some people even feed them high-protein pellets like dog food.

Many people enjoy keeping these insects as exotic pets. They like to stay in warm places and avoid bright lights. Because they are such good climbers, owners often use petroleum jelly on tanks. This helps keep them from escaping. In the United States, some states like Florida require special permits. This is because the climate in Florida is similar to Madagascar. If they escaped, they could become invasive. This means they might move into the wild and change the area. Some people even use them as food for pet reptiles.
