People use this tool for many different jobs. It can work like an axe for farm work. It can also work like a long knife in a fight. The blade is usually long and stays quite thick. In the English language, some people used to call it a matchet. In places like Jamaica or Barbados, people call it a cutlass instead.

There are many ways to use a machete every day. Farmers use them to cut through thick plants in the rainforest. They also use them to harvest crops like sugar cane. In Latin America, people use them for chores at home. They might use a machete to chop large food into pieces. Some people even use them to split open coconuts. It can also be used to make wooden handles for other tools.

History shows that machetes have been used in many big events. In 1762, people in Havana used them to defend their city. During the independence wars in Cuba, the machete was a famous weapon. On 10 October 1868, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes led a revolt using machetes. Later, on 4 November 1868, Máximo Gómez led a cavalry charge with them. These tools have been part of many different cultures for a long time. Some groups even teach babies to use sharp tools before they are one year old.

Many companies have made these tools over the years. The Collins Company in Connecticut started making them in 1845. They were so famous that people used their name for the tool. In England, Robert Mole & Sons made very high quality blades. Today, Colombia is the largest country that sends machetes to the rest of the world. Different places also have their own versions. For example, the panga is a type of blade used in East and Southern Africa.

Even though they are tools, machetes are part of many special dances. In Mexico, the Los Machetes dance tells a story about harvesting sugar cane. In Brazil, there is a dance called the dança dos facões. In this dance, men bang their machetes against things to act out a battle. The machete is also very important in symbols. For instance, the flag of Angola features a machete on it.
