Lyudmila was born in Moscow on May 26, 1938. She actually lived in the grand Metropol Hotel as a baby.

Her childhood was a very difficult time for her. Her father was declared an enemy of the state. This meant her family had to leave Moscow. She lived in group homes and on the streets. Other children even called her "The Moscow Matchstick" because she was so thin. She eventually returned to Moscow and studied journalism at Moscow State University.

Her career has changed a lot over many years. At first, she wrote plays instead of books. This was because the government watched written books very closely.

She even faced trouble from the KGB, which was a group that monitored people. Later, during a time of reform called perestroika, she could finally publish her stories. Her book *Immortal Love* made her a famous name very quickly. She also worked on the animated film *Tale of Tales* in 1979.

She also makes paintings like portraits and still lifes. These paintings have been shown in large museums like the Tretyakov Gallery. In 2023, she shared a very sad update. She said the war in Ukraine made it impossible for her to write. She felt the hatred of the war ended her profession.
