His stories often felt like strange, surreal dreams. Many people compared his style to the writer Franz Kafka. He liked to explore how people live in modern society. His writing could sometimes feel like a nightmare. These deep ideas made his work very special to readers.

Abe's life moved through many different places. He was born in Tokyo in 1924. Later, he grew up in Mukden, which is now called Shenyang. Because he moved so much, he felt like a man without a hometown. This feeling of not having a stable home stayed with him. It even influenced the themes in his books. He often wrote about people feeling unsettled or out of place.

He studied medicine at Tokyo Imperial University starting in 1943. He chose medicine partly to respect his father. He also knew it would keep him from being a soldier. In 1945, he married an artist named Machi Yamada. At first, they lived in old barracks in a bombed-out area. To pay their bills, Abe sold pickles and charcoal on the street. He eventually graduated with a medical degree in 1948.

Abe became a very successful author over time. He won the Akutagawa Prize in 1951 for his story "The Wall." His most famous book is "The Woman in the Dunes," published in 1962. This book became an award-winning film in 1964. In 1970, his book "Inter Ice Age 4" was the first Japanese science fiction novel translated into English. He also won the Yomiuri Prize in 1962 and the Tanizaki Prize in 1967.

Later in life, Abe focused on the theater. He started the Abe Studio in Tokyo in 1971. This was a place where he could train young actors. He taught at the Toho Gakuen College to find new performers. He wanted his actors to show deep, dramatic feelings on stage. He wrote and directed many plays at his studio until 1979. Abe died in Tokyo at age 68 after a brief illness.
