Abe was born in Tokyo in 1924. He grew up in Manchuria. This made him feel like a man without a home. He often felt uneasy about things that were too stable. As a boy, he loved math and collecting insects.

He studied medicine at a university. He did this to help his family. However, he chose to write instead. Early in his career, he sold charcoal and pickles on the street. He did this to pay his bills.

Abe won the Akutagawa Prize in 1951. This was a big honor for a writer. He became very famous for his book, The Woman in the Dunes. In 1964, this book became an award-winning film. His stories often felt like strange dreams. They explored how people live in a modern world.

He also started the Abe Studio. This was a place for actors to learn. He taught young people how to perform. He wanted to help them show deep feelings on stage. Abe died in Tokyo at age 68.
