Lydia was a very important place for trade and culture. One of its most amazing achievements was making money. The Lydians created some of the oldest coins in the world.

They used a special metal called electrum to make them. These coins helped people trade goods more easily across the region.

The history of Lydia began a long time ago. Before 800 BCE, the Lydian people started to live together as one group.

By the 600s BCE, they were a fully independent kingdom. The land was located near the Büyük Menderes River.

Early Lydian life was tied to the groups around them. They lived near other groups like the Hittites and the people of Arzawa. Even though we do not have many written records from then, we know they were a strong people.

Many kings helped shape the Lydian empire. A king named Gyges was the first one we know about from real records.

He worked hard to make Lydia a military power. Later, a king named Alyattes grew the kingdom even more.

He fought many battles to expand his borders. One famous event was a war with the Medes. It ended in 585 BCE during a solar eclipse. Both sides saw the eclipse as a sign to stop fighting.

After Alyattes, his son Croesus became a very powerful ruler.

Croesus ruled over many different groups of people. He was known for making friends with other lands. He made trade deals with the Greeks and the Egyptians. He also had good relations with the kings of Babylon and Sparta. Under his rule, Lydia reached its greatest strength. He controlled almost everything west of the Halys River. This made Lydia a center of wealth and power in the ancient world.

However, the era of the independent Lydian kingdom did not last forever. A Persian leader named Cyrus the Great began to rise to power. He fought the Lydians in battles at Pteria and Thymbra.

Eventually, the Persian army captured the capital city of Sardis. This ended the rule of the Mermnad dynasty. After this, Lydia became part of the Achaemenid Empire. Later, it also became a part of the Roman Empire.

The Lydian language eventually died out, too.
