Lydia was a famous kingdom in ancient times. It sat in western Anatolia, which is part of modern-day Turkey.

The history of Lydia began a long time ago. Before 800 BCE, the Lydian people started to live together as one group.
Many kings helped shape the Lydian empire. A king named Gyges was the first one we know about from real records.

After Alyattes, his son Croesus became a very powerful ruler.
However, the era of the independent Lydian kingdom did not last forever. A Persian leader named Cyrus the Great began to rise to power. He fought the Lydians in battles at Pteria and Thymbra.
Lydia was an influential Iron Age kingdom located in western Anatolia. This region is part of modern-day Turkey.

The geography of Lydia shaped its growth and its borders. The land sat near the Büyük Menderes River, also known as the Maeander.
The origins of the Lydian people are difficult to trace precisely. During the Late Bronze Age, the area was part of a larger polity called Arzawa. This group included sub-kingdoms like Mira and Šeḫa, as well as the city-state of Apasa. These groups had complex relationships with the Hittite Empire. They acted as allies, enemies, or vassals at different times. By roughly 800 BCE, the Lydian people achieved political cohesion. This allowed them to exist as an independent kingdom by the 600s BCE.
Lydia's history is marked by the rise of the Mermnad dynasty. Gyges was the first king of this line whose existence is proven by contemporary records.
Following a period of instability, King Alyattes transformed Lydia into a true empire. He worked with the Scythians to finally defeat the Cimmerian threat.
After Alyattes, his son Croesus became the last great king of the Mermnad dynasty.
The independence of Lydia ended due to the rise of the Persian Empire. The Persian king, Cyrus the Great, challenged Lydian authority. He fought the Lydians in battles at Pteria and Thymbra. Eventually, the Persian army besieged and captured the capital of Sardis. This event ended the Mermnad dynasty and the independent Lydian kingdom.
