Long ago, a group of people lived in Italy. They were called the Etruscans. They lived in many different cities. These cities worked together in groups.
Etruscan cities grew very strong. At their peak, they ruled much of central Italy.
The Etruscans had their own way of writing. They used an alphabet based on Greek letters.
The Etruscans were a group of people who built a great civilization in ancient Italy.
Life in these cities was organized around local power. Authority lived within individual cities and likely within specific families. At their strongest, elite families became very wealthy through trade. They traded goods with the Celts to the north and the Greeks to the south. These rich families showed their success in special ways. They filled large family tombs with expensive items from far away. They even used beautiful art to decorate these important places.
Historians have long wondered where the Etruscans came from. Some ancient Greek writers thought they moved from a place called Lydia. They believed a leader named Tyrrhenus led them to Italy. However, most modern scholars believe the Etruscans were an indigenous people. This means they were native to central Italy. The earliest evidence of their culture dates back to about 900 BC. This period began with the Villanovan culture during the Iron Age.
Writing was an important part of their daily life. The Etruscans used an alphabet that came from the Euboean Greek system. We can find early examples of their writing from around 700 BC. Even though they wrote many things, their language is still hard to understand. We only know parts of what it means today. Because of this, we must rely on Greek and Roman writers to learn their history.
Eventually, the power of the Etruscans began to change. Around 500 BC, their territory was at its largest size. But after the late 4th century BC, they faced the growing power of Rome. The two groups fought in the Roman-Etruscan Wars.
The Etruscan civilization was a powerful group of city-states in ancient Italy.
Etruscan political authority was not held by a single ruler. Instead, power lived within individual cities and wealthy families. This system allowed local leaders to manage their own affairs. During their peak, elite families became incredibly wealthy through international trade. They traded with the Celts to the north and the Greeks to the south. To show their status, these families filled large tombs with luxury goods. These imported items served as lasting evidence of their economic success.
The origins of the Etruscans have been debated for centuries. Ancient Greek writers like Herodotus and Thucydides suggested a migration. They thought the people moved from Lydia to Italy. They believed a leader named Tyrrhenus led this movement. However, modern scholars generally disagree with these ancient theories. Most experts now believe the Etruscans were an indigenous population. This means they were native to the central Italian region.
Archaeological evidence supports the idea of local development. The earliest identifiable Etruscan culture dates to about 900 BC. This began during the Iron Age with the Villanovan culture. This culture grew out of the earlier Proto-Villanovan culture. This earlier group was part of the European Urnfield culture system. Over hundreds of years, these local groups evolved into the complex Etruscan civilization we recognize today.
Writing was a vital tool for the Etruscan people. They developed a writing system based on the Euboean alphabet. The earliest known inscriptions date to around 700 BC. These were found in southern Etruria. Even today, the Etruscan language is only partially understood. This makes it difficult for researchers to study their history directly. Because of this, we must rely on later Greek and Roman sources. Many of these ancient writers actually viewed the Etruscans with disapproval.
The names used for the Etruscans vary depending on the source. They called themselves the Rasenna or Rasna, meaning "the people."

The rise of Rome eventually changed the course of Etruscan history. The Etruscan territory reached its maximum size around 500 BC. This was shortly after the Roman Republic was formed. However, the Roman-Etruscan Wars began in the late 4th century BC. Rome's expanding power caused the Etruscan city-states to succumb. In 90 BC, the Etruscans were granted Roman citizenship. By 27 BC, the entire region was part of the Roman Empire.
