Álvaro Arzú was an important leader in Guatemala. He was a businessman and a politician. He served as the 44th president of the country from 1996 to 2000.

He also worked many times as the mayor of Guatemala City. He was elected to that job six different times. He first ran for mayor in 1982. He was elected again in 1986, 2003, 2007, 2011, and 2015. His work shaped how many people lived in the city and the nation.

Arzú is best known for helping to end a long war. This was a civil war that lasted for 36 years. In 1996, he helped sign a peace accord. This was a formal agreement to stop the fighting. He met with a group called the URNG in Mexico in February 1996.

This meeting gave a new push to the peace talks. A ceasefire happened in March 1996. By the end of December 1996, a final accord for lasting peace was signed. This agreement helped change the laws of the land.

His time as president brought many changes to the country. He wanted to improve the way things worked for everyone. He invested a lot of money in infrastructure. Infrastructure means the basic systems like roads and power.

Because of this, roads became much better. More people received electric power and telephone service. He also worked to recognize the rights of indigenous communities. However, some people disagreed with his choices. He sold some public companies to private groups. This included the national airline, Aviateca, and the railway, FEGUA.

Life was not always easy during his leadership. His government faced many hard jobs and difficult events. In 1998, a huge storm called Hurricane Mitch caused much destruction. There was also an increase in the crime rate. Some people in his government were accused of harming activists. In 1998, Archbishop Juan José Gerardi was murdered. Later, people said members of the Presidential Guard were responsible.

Even with these hard times, the economy grew. The gross domestic product grew about 3 percent each year. Also, inflation was reduced to 5 percent.

Arzú continued to work for many years after his presidency. He was a member of the Central American Parliament from 2000 to 2004. He worked on the Transmetro bus system in the city. This system helps people travel quickly on buses. He also worked to fix up the historical center of Guatemala City.

Outside of politics, he was a great athlete. He was a national champion in a sport called squash.

He died in 2018 after a heart attack while playing golf. His son, Álvaro Arzú Escobar, also became a leader in the Congress of Guatemala.
